Why

ESPN required a motion system for the NBA Finals that could carry the scale of the event while remaining flexible across broadcast and promotional outputs.

The work needed to reflect two contrasting qualities. The Finals as a showpiece moment with a sense of control and polish, and the nature of the game itself, shifting between stillness and sudden bursts of speed and intensity.

Developed in collaboration with ESPN Creative Studio, the system needed to support a wide range of uses while maintaining a clear and consistent identity.

How

We developed a visual language built on a black and gold palette, combining precision with movement. At its core is a fluid gold simulation that forms, breaks apart and transitions between elements.

This allowed the same system to carry across titles, team and league logos, transitions and promotional assets, creating consistency while supporting the scale of broadcast.

Supporting environments were kept minimal to ground the visuals without competing with them. A motion-based typeset extended the system further, giving ESPN the flexibility to build additional assets as needed.

Outcome

The result is a cohesive motion system that moves between control and intensity, reflecting both the presentation of the Finals and the rhythm of the sport.

Built as a flexible toolkit, the package supports a wide range of broadcast and promotional outputs while maintaining a consistent visual identity across ESPN’s coverage.
